What is the ScholarSkills Spelling Teams League?
The ScholarSkills Spelling Team League is an association of public, private, and homeschool students preparing to compete in the ScholarSkills city, county, and state Spelling Team Tournament of Champions and the Scripps local, regional and national spelling bees. Students must be members of the ScholarSkills Spelling Team League to participate in our analytical spelling and vocabulary tournaments. The spelling league was founded by ScholarSkills for STARS, an academic institution dedicated to helping students build foundations for excellence in spelling, reading, and writing. ScholarSkills is an official regional partner of the Scripps National Spelling Bee.
What is the ScholarSkills Spelling Teams Tournament of Champions?
The ScholarSkills Spelling Team Tournament of Champions is an intensive word-mastery competition that requires students to build, analyze, spell, define, and contextualize words. Students must demonstrate a thorough knowledge of each word's phonemic and morphemic structures. The Tournament of Champions is a buzzer-styled competition.
How will the ScholarSkills Spelling Teams Tournament of Champions help children?
Students will get more opportunities to sharpen their spelling and competitive skills, which will accelerate their literacy abilities and enhance opportunities to compete at prestigious county, state, and national spelling and vocabulary events. Academic training and competition are proven ways for students to build confidence and self-esteem based on consistent achievement and progress towards worthy goals. Simply put, students will get more chances to learn and win as they grow within.
What ages or grade levels can participate in the ScholarSkills Spelling Teams Tournament of Champions?
Students can begin participating as early as four years old and continue participating until they are 14.
What are the various types of competitive spelling divisions?
Students are placed according to their age and grade levels into one of the following divisions:
Bee-First Spelling STARS (Grades K-1)
Two-Smart Spelling STARS (Grade 2)
Junior Spelling STARS (Grades 3-4)
Intermediate Spelling STARS (Grades 5-6)
Senior Spelling STARS (Grades 7-8)
What costs, if any, are associated with the ScholarSkills Spelling Teams Tournament of Champions?
League membership is free. League members will receive schedules for each upcoming tournament. Parents or teams may purchase official practice resources.
Are tournaments for teams or individuals?
Students participate as teams in the ScholarSkills Spelling Teams Tournament of Champions. Students may join as individuals, but each student will be assigned to a team based on grade level and geographic location. Each team is called the Brilliant Elite Spelling Team™️ or (the B.E.S.T.) Teams will add their region’s name to B.E.S.T. So, for example, the team representing NYC will be called NYC’s B.E.S.T. or NYC’s Brilliant Elite Spelling Team.™️
When does the ScholarSkills Spelling Teams Tournament of Champions season begin?
Our current schedule is as follows:
Spelling skills coaching and practice sessions begin in January and continue throughout the year.
Are tournaments held in person or online?
Tournaments will be held in person and online. Practice sessions or spelling meets will also be held in person and online.
